Welcome to Rush Flat Consulting!
Rush Flat Consulting is run by Brian Speirs.
Brian was Chief Economist for Meat & Wool New Zealand
for 15 years, and formed Rush Flat Consulting in 2004. Consulting work
was put on hold in 2006 when Brian went to work with the NZ Institute of Economic Research.
Now, Brian has moved to the UK, and is working with CACI in their Twickenham office.
In the mean time, this website still has some useful information. In particular, see the links to agri-business, economic, and computing resources, and also the software downloads for multi-value databases.
The OpenQM Appliance
There must be a lot of people who want to try a multi-value database, but don't want to go through (a) the hassle of registering for a trial version; (b) the hassle of downloading enormous packages, and then figuring out how to install them; (c) the hassle of installing the GPL version of OpenQM on a linux box; or (d) the expense of purchasing a licence. So, what else is available for them? Not much.
Until now. How about a complete linux virtual machine that installs inside Oracle VirtualBox with the GPL version of OpenQM already installed, along with help files and documentation? All for a download size of less than 60 MB! Most linux distros are about 10 times that size on their own! Even Puppy Linux (the usual favourite lightweight distro) is twice that size.
Read the notes here or download the virtual machine here .
Getting Started in OpenQM
Part 2 of Getting Started in OpenQM is now available! This covers programming in QMBasic, with particular emphasis on using the AccuTerm GUI environment. While this is nominally about using OpenQM, it will be useful for learning programming in any of the multi-value databases, and for learning how to program using AccuTerm.
This follows on from Part 1 of Getting Started in OpenQM released in 2008. This covered installation, configuration, a brief
introduction to the editors available, and a comprehensive introduction
to QMQuery.
Both of these publication aim to answer the question that is frequently raised in the multi-value database forums:
"Where is the documentation telling me how to use this software?"
Installing the GPL version of OpenQM on Ubuntu
Linux is (supposed to be) easy isn't it? For the mere mortals amongst
us, I have written up some notes on how to install the GPL version of
OpenQM on Ubuntu 7.10. This has now been updated to include Ubuntu
8.04, and installing the QMClient and QMSrvr services. See the downloads page for more information.
SysCtrl Account v1.10
SysCtrl is a control account for multi-value databases. It incorporates previous utilities offered here such as 'IA.Reformat',
File-Dump, and Import. SysCtrl is now at version 1.10 and now includes
utilities letting you transfer accounts between multi-value databases.
See the downloads page for more details.
Building an HTPC
Here are some thoughts on building a Home Theatre PC. One day I'll get around to writing up the actual build ... but not today!
